Ada, her nine year-old daughter and her piano arrive to an arranged marriage in nineteenth-century New Zealand. Because her husband refuses to transport her piano, Ada strikes a bargain with an illiterate neighbour, who forces her to earn back the piano. The arrangement draws all three into a complex emotional and sexual bond.
